Love From Planet Wine Cooler

1. What type of books do you write?
When I did my MFA at the University of British Columbia in the mid-1990s, all program participants were required to write in three genres to ensure we could make a living as writers. It's a demand that has served me well. My works ranges from technology journalism to creative nonfiction and from experimental fiction to chick lit.

2. What is the latest book you have written?
Love From Planet Wine Cooler is a collection of inter-rated short stories and it's definitely chick lit for the reader with literary tastes.
On Sale at US Amazon
Finnegan and His Sisters, the collection I am working on now, has more of a YA appeal, I think. I'm not finished with the book yet, but a few of the Finnegan stories have been published. One is currently up as part of the America's Next Author Social Writing Contest. If your readers leave a comment, they'll be able to influence how the rest of the book takes shape.

3. When did you start writing?
Writing has always been a big part of my life, but I started writing for publication when I was in third year university and was part of a close-knit seminar group. Having that supportive environment around a shared passion was and is hugely important to me.

4. Why did you start writing?
When I was 15, my father died of Leukemia. Then, my grandfather died of cancer. Then, I had cancer at 19. These were three very tragic events that changed me forever and, I felt, isolated me from my peers. Writing became my way of explaining, of re-joining the human race after being isolated by circumstances.

5. Who are your influences?
Margaret Atwood is the Godmother of Canadian literature and all Canadian writers. With her come Margaret Laurence, Alice Munroe, Richard Wright, Thompson Highway and Austin Clarke.

6. What can we expect from you in the near future?

Dry Stories, a collection of short stories about comforting someone get over addiction and recovery will be ready in 2013.

Broken Consciousness

My book’s called “Broken Consciousness” In forms
from sonnet, triolet and villanelle,
I’ve written of the shoe that drops, the bell
that signals epileptic seizure-storms.

This is my infant book but not the last
that I will write. I plan another one,
some poems of my father’s so the sun
can dawn on them, and others will be cast

in my own words. I’ve written now for ten
years. Why? My father took the time to teach
me classic forms. “Be bold,” he said, “and reach
high for those writing stars.” And so the yen

began in me. My father, gone three years
now, won’t be present when I read and sign
my books by end of year. I hope the line
will be as long as memory that cheers

me in remembering his lessons that
made him my influence along with Frost
and Sandburg, Whitman, Wordsworth. I get lost
in words that speak to me and tip their hat.

What more could you wish for

1. What types of books do you write?
I write contemporary fiction. It is also considered women's fiction and chick-lit. I think the term "chick-lit" gets a bad rap. Many people don't take that genre seriously but I'm not hung up on labels. Call it whatever you want...just read it!

2. What is the latest book you have written?
My debut novel, What More Could You Wish For, was published by St. Martin's Press in August 2012. It'she story of Libby Carson who has a great life—a thriving business, a family she adores, and a steady guy with whom she has “an arrangement.” Life is nice and tidy until her 50th birthday. That’s when Libby reconnects with her high school boyfriend online. That’s also when her significant other proposes. Libby’s been down the marriage road before and it just didn’t work. So while she’s trying to persuade her guy to keep things status quo, she also begins an email correspondence with her old flame. Just for fun, she tells herself. But fun soon turns to flirtation and Libby is startled to feel some stirrings of the passion she felt at seventeen. How is that possible? She thought she had things all figured out. Now, Libby must take stock of her life and everyone in it, to answer for herself the question everyone’s been asking her: What more could you wish for?

3. Is it part of a series, if so which one?
It is not part of a series although I've had requests for a sequel. And never say never, I always say.

4. When did you start writing?
I started writing in third grade when our assignment was to write a short story. I got hooked on writing when Mrs. Allen read my first story aloud to the class.

5. Why did you start writing?
I started writing because I loved to read.

6. Who are your influences?
Elizabeth Berg, Anna Quindlen, Harper Lee, Ann Patchett, Anita Shreve, Pat Conroy...and the list goes on.

7. What can we expect from you in the near future? Book signing events, other details
I am currently working on my second novel, and am doing various events and book signings for What More Could You Wish For. Check the events page of my website for specific dates.

Poison

1. What types of books do you write? Since I'm still just starting out, I haven't gotten a chance to really expand my genres of writing yet. But I absolutely love fantasy and the opportunities for creativity that it possesses. My first two books are YA Fantasy, and I also have a hankering for Dystopian, so I'll be trying that out soon, too!

2.What is the latest book you have written?
I actually just finished writing my second book, Possession, a few weeks ago! It's the sequel to my first book, Poison, and the second of a trilogy. It's due for release on Christmas Eve this year, so I'm very excited!

3. When did you start writing?
Back in eighth grade, I started to write short stories for a class that I was taking, and I've been in love with writing since then. I gradually evolved from short stories to novellas, then from novellas to novels, and here I am seven years later with two books under my proverbial belt already!

4. Why did you start writing?
Like I mentioned above, the writing was a requirement for this class, so I stuck it out until I eventually grew to enjoy it a lot. I continued writing even after that class because I loved it so much, I didn't want to let it go.

5. Who are your influences?
My influences are numerous, since I read so many novels these days. But if I had to choose my top three they would be: Suzanne Collins, D.J. MacHale, and J.K. Rowling. All of them possess a wonderful gift for story-telling that I hope to master one day.

6. What can we expect from you in the near future? Book signing events, other details
Possession will be released on December 24, 2012, so I will be having a blog tour at the beginning of the New Year in celebration of the release! Also, in the summer of 2013, my stand-alone dystopian "Cobra's Chain" will be released, so be on the lookout for that! Book signings and the like will most likely happen, but the details are yet to be finalized!

Who am I?

I am mother, entrepreneur, IT Engineer, poet and foremost a woman. I say this because, at times, we as mothers´forget we are individuals too. We hide under motherhood to excuse and justify our movements in life.

I have 3 children aged from 17 to 1 years old, they keep my on my toes 24-7. They are the biggest aspect of my life. They keep me thinking of new adventures all the time, and sometimes they stop me taking some of them too. I am known to be rather wild at times. A special quote from my 17-year-old the other day - Whilst picking on his younger brother, I pointed out that they all came from the same stomach, so he should not belittle him like that. His reply - That is the problem mother, we came from somewhere far worse than your stomach!!

Recently, self-published my first book of poetry called THE HIGHS, the lows, The Inbetweens. Which is exactly as the title describes, all about the different stages in my life. What makes it different from most? Everything, I am an average woman, fighting to survive in the world, and I have had too many kickbacks and keep trying to survive. That counts for a lot in my eyes and especially my childrens´eyes.

The next book of poetry, I have written is called Just Me. Yet, to be published. I want to produce hard copies of my first book prior to releasing the next one. It does not end there, it will be followed by Moments, and Untitled. Untitled, because it is exactly that, a book, which can not be classed as a collection, or given a title. There are a few poems in this book, that on Monday, I think the title is this, and by Friday the title changes. Other´s have read it and feel the same way, that the title of the poem changes on the mood that you are in, intrigued? I intend to publish it at some point next year, not sure when, it is all one big learning curve at the moment, called Life!

Eat, Pray, Love

Elizabeth Gilbert (played by Julia Roberts) realised after years (not sure how many because they were not revealed in the movie) she had been living in unhappiness in her marriage. So she left him for a man who looked like him and was a lot younger. Until, she finally figured out the problems were not the relationships, but simply within. She set on a journey to three countries, Italy, India and Bali. For 3 simply reasons, to eat, pray and then finally love.

Julia Roberts, is not my favourite actress. After watching the movie, the first time, and falling asleep. Simply, because I can never figure out if she is meant to be happy or sad. After Pretty Woman, I just felt there was no movie, she could stare in that could move mountains for me.

I decided to watch it again, and again, without falling asleep. I read the reviews on the movie, and thought, well, it is a bad movie, this is why you keep falling asleep. Then, I read it was based on a bestselling book, and this baffled me. Then, I came into the realisation, how many times, have you heard the book is better! Which I will purchase, in the near future.

Finally, I stayed awake through the whole movie, and thought I need to go to Bali. Not, because of the sea, sunshine, and finding the hunk that can not be found in any other country. I realised, whilst watching the movie. That this woman was a reflection of me with no kids. She constantly had people surrounding her, and for that moment in Bali, when she had no one surrounding her, she realised, who she liked, what she liked, how to think.........It was like she was lost in society, working, marriage and everything else. This is the reason, I am putting this as one of my favourite movies. I can relate, and with all the bad ratings in the world, which this movie has accomplished, it is a reflection of life, and how we continue with it, until, we stop, look and listen..............

Now it Begins

1. What types of books do you write?
My book is a Self help book, the second book that I am in the process of writing is a non fiction/fiction
story which is on the same vein as the Celestine Prophecies, although it is based on my grandfather who was famous in the 1950's with my mother performing mind reading, illusionist and escapology.

2. What is the latest book you have written?
My new book is called "Now it Begins" and it is practical and spiritual with ancient learning and short stories. The book is split into 10 distinct phases.
"As the world is changing fast, a great shift of universal energy is taking place. Some of us are aware of this and are ready to move forward and leave behind an old world that has suffered from greed, selfishness, anger, blame and hatred. This means, raising our vibration of energy from within and connecting with one another on a higher and faster frequency that is happening now on this planet. For some this is inconceivable and for others, the transformation has already begun". Further details are on my blog

3. Is it part of a series, if so which one?
No

4. When did you start writing?
I started writing 2009 when I wrote a Law of Attraction course and from there I started writing this book in 2010.

5. Why did you start writing?

Throughout my life, I have always felt a deep desire within to be able to help others in some way. For many years I was confused, searching and often leaving the path from my original thoughts as to where my true soul purpose may lie. I travelled around the world, had various jobs, started businesses and lost everything in a materialistic way many times over. I was also a singer and songwriter…still something was missing from within. Later I became interested in healing and other therapies, finally finding a way that I could build my life around without the need for trying.
I have always wanted to write a book for many years. Now it Begins has been written from my heart and includes short stories, life experiences, illustrated, researched, and the greatest thing of all, able to share this knowledge of self awareness to the world in these changing times. As everything comes to us at the right time and that time is now... so, Now it Begins!

6. Who are your influences?
My influences are Richard Bach "Illusions", James Redfield "The Celestine Prophecy", Deepak Chopra "Seven Spiritual Laws", Taosim, Eastern Philosophies and Spirituality.

7. What can we expect from you in the near future? Book signing events, other details
I hope to be doing more book signings in WH Smiths, London and Waterstones and introducing more workshops, as well as the Law of Attraction, and Reiki. I am also a Holistic clinical hypnotherapist, and past life regressionist. Further details can be found by clicking on this link

Thought of the Day

At times, I come across interesting articles, photos, stories and books. Not often, but at times.
I will post them under this section, Thought of the Day.

They will be simple things like a photo, I am not trying to be a budding photographer. Lately, I have been taking photos of my surroundings and found them to give me peace, for that one moment. Especially, because I am at constant war with my finances or lack of them. This is not having a good effect on other aspects of my life. I can safely say, I am scared. Does not happen often but it has happened now!

Today, my life is like a bridge. A bridge is seen as a safety net. And it holds the key, to you getting across from one haven to another, without having to go through all the problems underneath it. I feel like I can not trust that bridge, the place I am at I need to move from, the place I could go to, is unknown, and I am more likely to fall once, on the bridge, due to my constant problems and frustrations at the moment........................

Taking life for granted

I walk through the park nearly every day from the gym. Yesterday, I decided to take a phot of the path, in black and white. Not sure, why! I am not a photographer, or a budding photographer. Today, I decided to stop and take in my surroundings and take a photo. The only time, I take photos are off the kids, due to the fact I feel they grow too fast.
Later, at home, I looked at the photo, almost in a trance. Not because of the beauty of the photo. Simply because of one thing………………………….
I have walked this path, over a thousand times, and not one time, have I realised the beauty of it. It made me realise that there are so many things, I take for granted in life. Sure, I have my good times, which feel too unreal now…………..sometimes it feels like the end of my world and throws me, and makes me question who I am.
Sometimes, if I stop – listen and think for one moment, I would see beauty all the time. Not when my life is good and things are going good. This is not the meaning of seeing beauty. The beauty is in the appreciation of life regardless of how you want to see it, see it for what it really is……………
We all know life is too short, so why do we continually take it for granted.

Don´t Judge a Book By Its Magic

Don´t Judge a Book By Its Magic is Book 1 of The Convergence series.

Synopsis:

I’m a normal girl. I am. I love shoes, fragranced body care, and hair products. I love all the chick flicks that have come out in the theaters in the last 2 years (and a lot of the old ones) and I obsess about my wardrobe. I respond positively to most of the marketing directed at females in my age group.

My name is Colleen Underhill, and the only abnormal thing about me is that I just discovered I am, or I transformed into, a magician; not the disappearing bunny kind, but the power-shooting-out-of-your-hands kind of magician.

My problem now is that I do NOT believe in magic. Well, I believe in it. I have seen it shoot out of my own hands, but I oppose it in a moral sense; no hexes, no spells, no incantations, no potions, no amulets, no tomes, no casting circles, no eye of newt, none of that. I have to be very clear because people pressure me about it. Whatever they say about “how it’s done,” this is a morality issue for me and I will not cave in to their pressure.

But what do I do now?

Mark the date on your calendar for Don’t Judge a Book By Its Magic’s Virtual Release Party Oct 26th-28th!

On Sale, at various book shops, click to purchase via Goodreads

My Children

Kiss me when you wake,
Embrace me when you are near,
Love me all your life

I wrote this for a recent poetry contest. I feel it signifies in 3 lines how I feel about my children. They are growing up so fast, and as I watch them grow and become more independent, I feel the need to hold on to them more.

Moments Collide

Moments Collide is the story told by Felix LaPage, a young man with huge musical aspirations. Growing up, Felix developed a love of music, and with his cello, worked his way through school to try and become a musical success.

However, that's not the whole story. While working toward his musical dreams, Felix met a woman who would change the course of his life, but not necessarily in a good way. With this woman, Rayne, Felix learns that not everyone is kind or selfless. Struggling through Rayne's verbal and emotional abuse, Felix also must face getting over her multiple affairs.

It's one night, on a long train-ride home, where Felix meets a young woman who shows him a different path, a path that could lead to his own personal happiness, free of struggle and pain. It's up to Felix, however, to choose whether or not he's meant to walk the painful path with Rayne, or a path that allows him to be free.

Definition of being a Mother

I remember when I had my first son. My first thoughts were what is all the fuss about. When I was younger the number of children I wanted changed from 6 to 0 as I grew older. For the simple reason, I looked at some mothers and they looked like they had been in World War 2, eever since they started having children. Their children, looked like they lived in palaces. When he was a baby, I recall, getting him ready, feeding him, bathing him and thinking this is not so hard. I could take him out to the park all day, and go clubbing all night. Life seemed too good. There were these constant debates in the media, whether, it is better to be a stay home Mum or go to work etc. Unfortunately, I never had the choice. The day it hit me, the Definition of Being a Mother, was when I was preparing him to go to school, and I had not enrolled him in any school! I thought I was all prepared listing him the year before the school year. There were Mum´s that had listed their child since they were pregnant. My first thought, what was I doing? And it was too soon, then? I was enjoying him and my life was fine, so why stress myself so early for no reason. From that moment onwards it was a constant struggle, not only for schools, but life in general. This is when I felt "Motherhood". This is when I began to question, my role as a mother. This was the time I had to think about his future, and how he would get there. Morales that I had to install in him, influences and choices I had to make for his life. Before, he went to the park and played with anyone. Now, I would watch him hanging around certain people and think, I do not want you to be my son´s friend. I never understood, why mothers felt the need to go back to work when their kids started school. I felt this was the time they needed to be there, not only because of the school hours, but simply because this is when the real hard work began. I would like to know other person´s thoughts and If they can relate to this day, i.e. when the definition of being a mother or father began for them………………… THE HIGHS, the lows, The Inbetweens, now on sale at Amazon, click this link to purchase
